Le Nouveau Film de Luc Besson
Whenever I read those words I get excited after all this is the man that gave the world Subway, La Femme Nikita, Leon, The Fifth Element, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc and one of my favorite Paris movies, Angel-A.

Les Aventures Extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec (I am sure you can work out the translation!) will premiere at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival next month but sadly there's no word yet as to a US release date.
According to the film's English site the story goes something like this. 'The year is 1912. Adèle Blanc-Sec, an intrepid young reporter will go to any length to achieve her aims, even sailing to Egypt to tackle Mummies of all shapes and sizes. Meanwhile, in Paris, it's panic stations! A 136-million-year old pterodactyl egg on a shelf in the Natural History museum has mysteriously hatched, and the bird subjects the city to a reign of terror from the skies. But nothing fazes Adèle Blanc-Sec whose adventures reveal many more extraordinary surprises...'
The trailer below is in French but still shows us that this is a movie we should all be very excited about.

The Greatest - Really?
Who didn't love An Education when we all fell for the Oscar nominated performance given by Carey Mulligan and amazingly the young British actress has got another four movies in the can and ready to roll. The next film to hit our screens is The Greatest where she stars alongside Susan Sarandon and Pierce Brosnan in an emotional drama about a grieving pregnant teen (yes I know it sounds like a Soap). From the trailer below the movie could go either way for me. I recently had to eat a large slice of humble pie having enjoyed The Blind Side way more than I ever thought I would after watching the trailer so I am hesitant to offer early criticism based on what you see below. That said Mulligan's American accent sounds half hearted at best and the whole thing looks just a little too syrupy for me.

Anyway have a watch and see what you think.

Mad Men & Barbie?
Well that's a blog post title I didn't ever think I would write. Of course if there is money to be made you can be sure someone will be making it and so the wise toy makers over at Mattel (who I am sure look nothing like Benny Hill in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) have come out with a line of barbie dolls based on the hit TV show Mad Men. No doubt collectors and wags everywhere will be throwing down the $75 to get their very own Don or Betty Draper but I don't think I will be cruising ebay for bargain. There is nothing about the show that says 'collectible' to me but naturally this being essentially a marketing gimmick there is no doubt that it fits in very well with the show's raison d'etre.
What about you Mad Men fans out there? Would you buy your very own Don?

New Doctor Who Season on BBC America
Here is a teaser trailer for the new season of the classic British Sci-Fi show Doctor Who which returns to BBC America on April 17th. The new season introduces us to the latest and youngest actor to portray the role of the Doctor with Matt Smith checking in at just 27. He is joined as the character of the Doctor so often has been through out the years by a companion Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillan. Gillan had a small role in the show back in 2008 as a Soothsayer in the episode The Fires of Pompeii.

I grew up with the show as a lad in England and at the ripe old age of 42 I find myself as excited about the new season as I have ever been. It helps that early reports of Smith's performances are apparently reminiscent of my favorite incarnation of the Doctor in the 80's played by the 'uber wonderful' Tom Baker.

Logorama - Watch the Oscar Winning Short
I posted a clip of Logorama a while back when it was announced that the animated brand masterpiece had been nominated for an Academy Award. Well now that it WON! you can check out the full version below in all it's subversive glory. I am not one for brands myself, finding them gauche at best and downright evil at their worst but you have to take your hat off to the creators Francois Alaux and Herve de Crece for giving us the spectacle of Ronald McDonald going on a bloody rampage in LA!

Betty White to host SNL
After a very successful Facebook campaign NBC have invited Betty White to host the Saturday Night laugh fest on May 8th aged 88! A statement from NBC reads:
NEW YORK, NY - March 11, 2010 - Legendary and multiple Emmy Award winner Betty White will take her long-anticipated turn at hosting NBC's "Saturday Night Live" on May 8. White will make her first appearance in Studio 8H.
The six-time Emmy winner and cultural icon will host "SNL" for the first time in her illustrious seven-decade-long career. White is best known for her performance as Rose Nylund on NBC's "The Golden Girls," the beloved comedy series that aired from 1985 to 1992. Previously,
she co-starred as Sue Ann Nivens in the classic comedy series "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."
In January, White was the proud recipient of the 2010 SAG Lifetime Achievement Award. White appeared in the 2009 romantic-comedy feature film "The Proposal," alongside Ryan Reynolds and Oscar winner Sandra Bullock, and can be seen again this fall in the film "You Again," starring Kristin Bell.
"I can't think of a better way to spend Mother's Day weekend than with Betty White " said Lorne Michaels, Creator and Executive Producer of SNL.
"Saturday Night Live" is from SNL Studios in association with Broadway Video. The creator and executive producer is Lorne Michaels. Steve Higgins and Marci Klein are producers. Ken Aymong is supervising producer. Seth Meyers is head writer. Don Roy King directs.

Tron Legacy Billboard Poster
In a marketing move that is sure to turn heads (and generate a fender bender or two!) Slash Film report that 'Walt Disney Pictures bought the billboard located at Santa Monica/Westwood in Los Angeles for an entire year.' Apparently the location will have a new Tron Legacy billboard poster every 6 weeks depicting the story of the long awaited sequel up until it's 3D release in December. I love the artwork that has come out of the Tron Legacy campaign so far and judging by the recently released trailer it should be a blockbuster of a movie that is as enjoyable to watch as it is gorgeous to look at.

Oscar Winners 2010
Last nights Academy Awards was one of the best in recent memory for me. I thought Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin were excellent as co-hosts and the production was on the whole a first class affair. Of course it's always a personal thing but I could have done without the interpretive dance numbers but I did like the James Taylor appearance during the 'In Memoriam' part of the show.Did I agree with all the winners? Not at all. My joy at Christophe Waltz picking up Best Supporting Actor was marred by Avatar not winning Best Picture of even worse for me Cameron not being picked as Best Director. Well that's the Academy for you. Every year they seem to make wacko decisions and this year was no different. There is a school of thought that says the Academy has something against sci-fi movies and being a fan of the genre I would probably agree but that aside it's impossible to deny the originality and creativity Cameron brought to Avatar which was surely worthy of recognition at the highest level. That's not to take anything away from The Hurt Locker which was an excellent film, I simply think the Academy got it wrong.
OK, sermon over it's now time to take a look at the full list of last nights winners.
