The Return of Jean-Pierre Jeunet

OK I will say from the start if you're not in the mood for ludicrous amounts of enthusiasm and gushing about my favorite French film director then now might be a good time to stop reading!

Today I caught the first teaser clip of the new film from the bizarrely talented writer/director Jean-Pierre Jeunet entitled Micmacs à tire-larigot which is a comedy in the style of Oscar nominated Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain and the 1991 black comedy Delicatessen. It's the directors first film since 2004's A Very Long Engagement and early word is that it is a satire on the arms trade. The clip below clearly shows we are certainly going to be in for yet another visual treat care of the gorgeous colors employed with such stunning effect in Amélie.

Fans of modern French cinema will surely recognise two of the best homegrown actors France has to offer with the lead going to Danny Boon who was so good in 2006's Mon meilleur ami. It would hardly be a Jeunet movie without the appearance of the terrific Dominique Pinon whose performance as the paranoid would be Casanova of the Cafe Des Deux Moulins in Amelie still makes me laugh when I think about it now.

Micmacs à tire-larigot releases in France on October 28th and hopefully not too long after that across the pond.

NBC Wins Right to Show Michael Jackscon Doc

You may have seen a 2003 Michael Jackson documentary at some point featuring Martin Bashir who was with the UK network ITV1 when it originally aired. It was an interesting and of course at times bizarre look into Jackson's life with Bashir getting access few journalists had enjoyed before with the late singer.

NBC has managed to gain the right to show Living with Michael Jackson which will put them in the strange position of airing a documentary featuring another networks anchor. Bashir is currently appearing on ABC's Nightline and was with Jackson in Berlin when the weird 'baby-dangling' incident took place.

An edited version of the documentary airs tonight on NBC.

The Invention of Lying

Hero to all of us very average looking English blokes, Ricky Gervais is back with a new comedy that offers us all a world where everyone tells the truth (perish the thought!). Written and directed by Gervais himself along with Matthew Robinson this looks to have a very similar feel of Ghost Town which was one of my favorite comedies of last year. Throw in Jason Bateman, Jonah Hill, Jennifer Garner (OK, I am not a huge fan of her movies generally), Christopher Guest, Patrick Stewart, Rob Lowe and Tina Fey and I have a feeling this is going to do very well indeed.

Check out the trailer below and look for the film in theaters this September.

Favorite Promo Poster #12 - Dexter Season 4

What a perfect way to promote the new season of Dexter that will be seen on Showtime in this Fall. As season three drew to a close we sound out that our friendly neighborhood serial killer was going to be a daddy and I can only imagine the fun the writers are having with that premise right now. Dexter is currently filming in and around Miami and September 27th is the current date for season four to begin.

One of my favorite ER actors, Noah Wyle is set to return to the Small Screen taking a role in Steven Spielberg's new untitled sci-fi drama that will air on TNT. Wyle who was recently seen in the TNT Librarian TV movies will play the leader of a human resistance force struggling against an alien occupation. The pilot should have a good chance as it is being written by Robert Radat who penned the script for Saving Private Ryan. No release dates announced yet.

Daybreakers Trailer

Well it's been a while since I got excited about the release of a new Ethan Hawke movie but that has changed with the release of the Vampire movie Daybreakers trailer. There are those, and I think I might be one of them, that say this current crop of Vampire movies and TV shows really is getting old but by the looks of this flick I will patiently sit through just one more!

The film looks beautiful, appears to have an intelligent script and stars on of my absolute favorites of cinema and someone I once bumped into (literally) in a Soho grocery store, Willem Dafoe. Who can forget his extraordinary performance as the insane Bobby Peru in David Lynch's 1990 film Wild at Heart? Daybreakers is set in 2019 when a virus has has mutated the majority of humans on earth into vampires and they are faced with a dwindling blood supply. A human resistance is formed and along with a few Vampires that have turned against their own kind begin the fight to save humanity.

Daybreakers will be release in January of 2010.

New Drama from AMC

In a TV world where major networks give away their coveted 10pm weeknight drama spot to offer more mild (bland) chat shows it is refreshing to hear that AMC has just greenlit a new drama called Rubicon. It will be the channels third ongoing series joining critically acclaimed Mad Men and Breaking Bad and let's all join together and thank the holy TV gods that someone is still willing to fund the relatively costly process of creating original drama.

Admittedly I don't watch Breaking Bad but Mad Men to me is movie quality TV that is miraculously not on a premium channel like HBO or Showtime but instead on good old basic cable. I for one will be tuning in next year when Rubicon debuts as a political thriller starring Six Feet Under favorite Lili Taylor and every Brit's favorite Queen Miranda Richardson.

NBC take note.

In Memoriam - Farrah Fawcett

Actress Farrah Fawcett, star of TV's Charlie's Angels, has died aged 62 after a battle with cancer, her representative says.

Fawcett was nominated for both Emmys and Golden Globes in her acting career and after Angels became known for taking on more challenging roles including The Burning Bed, Nazi Hunter: The Beate Klarsfeld Story and Poor Little Rich Girl: The Barbara Hutton Story.

However it is as Jill Munroe in the classic 70's TV detective series Charlies Angels that Fawcett found worldwide fame. The actress only starred in one full season of Angels but made guest appearences in seasons three and four.

Towards the end her longtime friend Ryan O'Neal was ever present by her bedside.

Tivo to be the Google of Television?

According to an article in Business Week recently Tivo want to develop past their current status as a fancy (and it really is the cream of the crop) DVR to become all things to all people who like to interact with the small and often not so small screen in their living room.

"Like Google," says CEO Thomas S. Rogers of the multitude of growing entertainment options now available via Cable or Satellite TV, "TiVo will bring that ease of use to TV sets."

I have to say I have been a Tivo devotee from the moment I got my hands on a Series One version back in the early 2000s. It's functionality and intuitive navigation are the reason the company generates such loyalty over the generic versions offered by the Cable and Dish people. I would say if anyone has a shot at such a lofty goal then an outfit like Tivo with already very strong brand recognition (even non Tivo people refer to 'tivoing' a show) will be the likeliest to succeed.

Alice Revealed

The actress who plays Alice in Wonderland in Tim Burton's 2010 version is Canberra, Australia native Mia Wasikowska. If you saw the excellent Defiance you will remember her as the girlfriend of Jamie Bell's character. HBO viewers would also recognize her from the In Treatment (not a show I enjoy) as recurring character Sophie. Here is the missing image from my previous post about this movie showing Wasikowska in all her Alice glory!

The Hurt Locker

This movie has just come to my attention and once again congrats if you live in NY or LA (I assume we all realize I am not talking about Louisiana!) because it opens in there on Friday and for the rest of the US July 10th in other select cities fortunately including Phoenix.

According the the movies official site the film 'is a riveting, suspenseful portrait of the courage under fire of the military's unrecognized heroes: the technicians of a bomb squad who volunteer to challenge the odds and save lives doing one of the worlds most dangerous jobs.'

Set in today's Iraq the film has a strong cast including a couple of favorites of mine, Guy Pearce and Ralph Feinnes. From the looks of the trailer it is a film that is sure to get the blood pumping and will no doubt be one most guys will be adding to their summer movie list. The lead role of Staff Sgt William James played by Jeremy Renner looks particularly interesting and this could be the part Renner has been waiting for to become the big time actor I think he deserves to be ... he is very watchable indeed.

New from M. Night Shyamalan

Coming next summer from the uncompromising director that is M. Night Shyamalan is The Last Airbender, the story of Aang, "a ten year old successor to a long line of Avatars, who must put his childhood ways aside and stop the Fire Nation from enslaving the Water, Earth and Air nations." (IMDB).

Frankly I haven't got a clue what that means and the teaser below doesn't exactly enlighten us but hey it's an M. Night movie which means good or bad it is unlikely to be boring.

Yes Man Strong on Second Viewing

I watched Yes Man for the second time last night and I am not surprised to report it was still an excellent comedy the second time around. For those of you that haven't rented the DVD yet here is my original review from April.

If you heard that this movie was a return to the great Jim Carrey comedies of the 90's you heard right as this is right up with with Liar Liar and Dumb and Dumber. I think Carrey has made some interesting choices over the years and certainly enjoyed it when he chose more serious movies like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Number 23 (although that one did have its unintentional comedic moments). That said, it's hard to deny where this actors talents really shine which is in frenetic slapstick flicks that make full use of his ability to contort his face, and often body, in a way that is so naturally funny.

In Yes Man Carrey plays Carl Allen, a man whose life is so drab and dull because he never says yes to anyone or anything. So after missing his friends engagement party he decides to attend a life improvement seminar lead by the always intense Terrance Stamp which espouses the philosophy that saying Yes to everything will lead to happiness and fulfillment in all aspects of your life. Well it does! Carl ends up with a promotion at the bank he works at and stumbles across a new girlfriend in the form of Allison played by the joyously kooky Zooey Deschanel. However as his romance with Allison progresses he continues to say Yes and trouble looms with the movie revealing the rather unsurprising moral of the tale that you really shouldn't say yes to everything!

I can't wait until the end of this review to tell you that I ABSOLUTELY FRICKIN' LOVED THIS MOVIE! Yes that might come across as somewhat over the top but I don't remember the last time I sat and laughed pretty much all the way through a light comedy like this. The film worked on a bunch of different levels for me ... it is a straight out laugh-fest with decent gags and classic Carrey slapstick, a satisfying rom-com where you actually like both the leads and are hoping it all works out for them and even a light hearted questioning of your own life and if it is too full of Nays and not enough Yays.

The supporting cast do a solid job with Bradley Cooper taking over that buddy role that Jeremy Piven used to be seen in so often before his career took off. Carl's co-worker at the bank is the hilarious Kiwi Rhys Darby from Flight of the Conchords who has a penchant for Harry Potter costumes (the Potter party scene in the movie is hysterical).

It is Carrey and Deschanel that make this movie such a satisfying 100 minutes of DVD couch time with funny, real and sometimes even touching performances. There is no doubt I have a serious movie crush on Deschanel who seems to just get better with every film I see her in but the best thing about this film was seeing Carrey return to such fine form. Rent it today!

Rating: ***** (yes it was THAT good)

Zombieland Trailer

As a friend of mine, who is a Manchester City fan, recently said when he saw a photo of the worlds best soccer player and ex Manchester United star Ronaldo holding a purse in Los Angeles "FFS is it Christmas?". I felt exactly the same way when i watched the trailer for the new zombie action/comedy starring Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray. I have a feeling at some point in the distant future I will grow tired of this genre that I got hooked on after seeing Shaun of the Dead for the first time ... but frankly that's a long way off right now and I can't wait to see this flick. Harrelson seems to be channeling his inner Mickey Knox from 1994's Natural Born Killers (remember all the fuss about that film?) and he does it with beautiful timing by the looks of the trailer below. Anyway for those of you that like zombies and laughs in equal measure ... enjoy.

You may have noticed at the end of the trailer how Hollywood is looking to Twitter to promote their product ... works for me! If you haven't 'followed me' yet you can do so @bigsmallscreen.

The Rise of Chris Messina

I like when this happens. You know an actor from a TV show you know really well who suddenly pops up in movies you are watching playing smaller characters until suddenly he is appearing in a bigger role and you realize you have just watched the ascent of a real talent.

So here is how I experienced the rise Chris Messina, a face I am sure we will see more and more of ...

2005 - Six Feet Under (I know, I know)

Messina played the Republican foil to Claire Fisher's angry Bush-hating artist perfectly with the writers allowing someone with ideals they clearly don't share to become a likable character for the audience as the series drew to a close.

2008 - Vicky Cristina Barcelona

This was a small role but still noticeable for the 'hey it's that guy again' this time playing the very non-Javier Bardem character of Doug, husband to Rebecca Hall's Vicky.

2009 - Away We go

Yes, this is why Messina is on my mind! This time he plays a friend of Burt and Verona's in Montreal as a husband torn up by his wife's pregnancy troubles. In one of the most poignant scenes in the movie Messina shows a depth that was hinted at in Six Feet Under and gives a performance that will surely lead to other meatier offers.

Naturally I am the last person on earth to have tracked this talented mans rise up the Hollywood list of jobbing actors as we will all soon see him alongside Ms Meryl Streep in the upcoming Julia & Julia and taking a part in the new Jessica Alba flick An Invisible Sign of My Own.

Keep an eye out for this guy ... he is very good at his craft.

Movie Review - Away We Go

I am writing this review from a hotel in Tucson, AZ which was featured in the movie I am reviewing ... a first for me!

Last night after much anticipation I finally got around to seeing the new Sam Mendes movie Away We Go starring John Krasinski (Jim Halpert from The Office) and SNL favorite Maya Rudolph. The trailer suggested this was right up my alley with the story centering on a couples nomadic trek across America (and Montreal!) to try and find a place to settle down and raise the baby that is due in a few months. Krasinski and Rudolph looked to have great chemistry in the trailer and it certainly played out in the film with the two of them sharing the screen with such ease it was hard to forget they are not actually an item in real life (although according to Mendes they were great friends off camera throughout the shoot).

The movie sets the tone from the get go with a very funny bedroom scene in which Burt (Krasinski) is enjoying an intimate moment with Verona (Rudolph) when he realizes through somewhat unique means that she might actually be pregnant. It was a real 'laugh out loud' way to start the flick and just the first of many scenes where I was giggling like an idiot or belly laughing along with the rest of the theater. Fast forward 6 months and Burt and Verona head off to tell Burt's parents played with aplomb by the always on form Catherine O'Hara and Jeff Daniels, the good news. To avoid too many spoilers they end up hitting the road looking for a place to settle down and the first place is my hometown of Phoenix where they hook up with Verona's ex colleague Lily played by the West Wing's Allison Janney whose attitude to parenting was another comedy highlight. Tucson is the next stop on the tour where Verona's sister is working at the hotel I am sitting in right now! It was an odd experience to turn to my fellow moviegoers and whisper ... 'we'll be there tomorrow'!

John Krasinski, Maya Rudolph & Sam Mendes at the Marriott Starr Pass Resort in Tucson, AZ

Well the tour of the country continues up to Madison, WI where they meet up with a friend of Burts family and all round nut 'LN' played by Maggie Gyllenhaal in one of this years tour de force comedy performances. The scenes, and I wont go into too much detail as you just have to see them for yourself, are to coin an oft misused phrase ... uproarious! The theater was drowned in laughter in a way I haven't seen for a very long time during a movie. There are many many great scenes in Away We Go but frankly they could release just the ones involving Gyllenhaal (about 15mins) and it would still be a hit!

The tour continues up to Montreal and down to Miami with Burt and Verona learning about themselves and their friends and family as they travel experiencing various misadventures. While you might think that this is a 100% all out 'laugh fest' it is also a very touching movie that offers the characters as mirrors to our lives and asks questions sometimes as difficult/rewarding as those that were asked of movie going couples in last years wonderful Revolutionary Road.

Sam Mendes is clearly enjoying a rich vein of form as a director, here supported by two talented lead actors and a script that is absolutely on point all the way through the film. It's another movie from Focus Features who don't seem to be able to put a foot wrong at the moment (Milk, Sin Nombre, 9, Taking Woodstock ... amazing!).

Away We Go is currently on limited release but surely the success and buzz it has enjoyed since opening will push it out to the multiplexes as happened with Milk. You may have to look around and travel a mile of two extra to see this film but I promise you that it will be the best 98 minutes you will have spent at the movies in quite a while.

Rating: *****

Away We Go - A Must See?

Family Guy iphone App Launches

I am a big fan of Family Guy as any regular readers of The Big & Small Screen are aware but I think an iphone app maybe taking things just a little too far. For $1.99 you can now watch popular clips, make your own video mix and play a few games involving the main characters.

Call me old fashioned but with the show in national syndication, new series still being created and now as much FG as you could hope for available on Hulu isn't this just a bit unnecessary? I am an iphone user and just like everyone else am generally gaga at the amazing choices of apps that are available to make your life more useful/fun/educated/informed etc but I will not be sending two bucks to FOX for this latest franchise outreach. I am sure I will be in the minority and we will soon see the app rising up itunes download rankings but I will have to make do with watching Mr McFarlane's characters the old fashioned way ... on my laptop!

Dead Snow - Ein! Zwei! Die!

With an 'Official Sundance Selection' behind it the Norwegian Horror flick Død Snø (Dead Snow to you and I) looks like a film that is worth some attention. On first glance it looks like a monster movie mash-up of Shaun of the Dead, Let The Right One In and Cabin Fever!

The plot is certainly not complex as we follow a group of medical students heading off for a snowy Easter ski vacation in an area of Norway that was previously occupied by the Nazis during World War Two. The Germans were eventually chased away by the locals into the mountains where legend has it they froze to death never to be hard from again ... until now!

This is certainly not Scandinavian horror quality a la Tomas Alfredson's Let The Right One In but for silliness and the highest quota of Nazi Zombies that have appeared in a movie for a while this one scores big. As for the tag line of Ein! Zwei! Die! well that is pure genius!

Here is the trailer and if there are any readers who don't like movie blood ... best not press play!

The movie will get a limited US release on Friday.

Cold Souls Poster

The Paul Giamatti movie Cold Souls has just released it's promo poster and it is nice and weeeeird!

Also starring David Strathairn and Emily Watson, the film debuted at Sundance this year and looks like it will get a limited release in August here in the US (NYC & LA). According to IMDB the plot goes something like this ...

"In response to shiny, bigger, better American consumerism comes Cold Souls, a metaphysical comedy in which souls can be extracted and traded as commodities. Balancing on a tightrope between deadpan humor and pathos, and between reality and fantasy, the film presents Paul Giamatti as himself, agonizing over his interpretation of Uncle Vanya. Paralyzed with anxiety, he stumbles upon a solution via a New Yorker article about a high-tech company promising to alleviate suffering by deep-freezing souls. Giamatti enlists their services, intending to reinstate his soul once he survives the performance. But complications ensue when a mysterious, soul-trafficking mule borrows Giamatti's stored soul for an ambitious, but unfortunately talentless, soap-opera actress. Rendered soulless, he is left with no choice but to follow the trail back to St. Petersburg."

Much like Nicolas Cage (OK Bangkok Dangerous was an error) I would watch Giamatti in just about anything but this does look like a very very interesting flick.

Wanted Again?

Oh dear, it seems that the dismal shambles of a one star movie (click here for my review) that was Wanted is being trotted out for a second go around. The same director, Timur Bekmabetov is apparently roping 'Angie Jolly' in again to play the pouting bullet curving assassin with 'tude.

There is no doubt the movie performed well raking in $341,000 in Worldwide box office alone but when you introduce something as silly as 'The Loom of Fate' to an audience it's best to just pretend it didn't happened and never speak of it again! Sadly people of taste are not in charge of green-lighting action movie sequels (OK, OK, Aliens is everyones favorite exception to that rule) and my advice would be stay away at all cost.

House is the Most Popular TV Show in the World

According to a ratings agency called Eurodata TV Worldwide the show has been seen by more than 81.8 million viewers in 66 countries, representing a potential 1.6 billion viewers.

This is an amazing feat and must be staggering for Laurie whose previous TV work was mostly limited to British comedies seen in a few international markets. As someone who blogs about TV it does leave me feeling a tad guilty that I have never even seen an episode of the show and it looks like this statistic might finally get me to add the first season to my Netflix list.

Twin Peaks Coffee?

Co-created by high haired director David Lynch Twin Peaks was my favorite TV show of the early 1990s. So much can be said of the show that it deserves its own blog (check here for more) but I will leave that to fans more obsessive than I to write. However this quirky, funny, spooky, disturbing and often scary piece of quality TV came to mind this morning when I found out David Lynch sells his own coffee on his website. The creative mind of Lynch isn't restricted to creating, writing and directing movies and TV shows and according to the site you can purchase a 'David Lynch Signature gift pack including organic house roast, organic espresso and organic French roast decaf' from the comfort of home!

If you know anything about Twin Peaks you will remember Kyle MacLachlan's excellent portrayal of FBI Agent Cooper who loved nothing more than a 'Damn fine cup of coffee' with his cherry pie. You have to love the web for allowing people to create pages like the Twin Peaks Brewing Co which is dedicated to all things Cooper, Coffee and Lynch and one can only assume the creator of the site drinks Mr Lynch's coffee daily! Oh and by he way in case you wondered how Agent Cooper drank his coffee well it's the way every man should (i.e how I do!) and to quote the man himself when asked how he takes his coffee he responds 'Black as midnight on a moonless night' - How very David Lynch.

Movie Review - Gran Torino

Unlike many movie fans I don't generally get over excited at the prospect of a new Clint Eastwood film. As an actor and director I have enjoyed his work but there have also been some films that have left me wondering what all the fuss is about. Perhaps it's because I am not a fan of the Western genre or maybe as I was just that little bit too young to see Dirty Harry when it first came on the Big Screen ... I was four years old! I think I am more of a fan of Eastwood as a director than an actor with Bridges of Madison County (yes, you heard right), Mystic River and now Gran Torino amongst my favorites.

It's been five years since the world saw Eastwood act in the multi Oscar winning Million Dollar Baby and judging by his performance here he clearly missed being in front of the camera. As grouchy and bigoted Korean War Vet Walt Kowalski, he turns in an assured performance that is 100% natural and believable. The movie deals with Walt recently losing his wife and coming to terms and ultimately building a relationship with a Hmong family in the house next door. After much growling and grumbling a real relationship is formed between Walt and the son and daughter of the Hmong family with the Eastwood's character becoming a father figure the boy never had after he forgives the teenager for trying to steal his 1972 Gran Torino (a dare the boy was put up to by a local Asian street gang). There are numerous scenes that offer humor and some amount of pathos for a man whose relationship with his real sons has broken down over the years through their inability to communicate.

There was perhaps a temptation to overplay the obvious opportunities for tension with a Korean war Vet interacting with his Hmong neighbors but Eastwood would never stumble so obviously as a director. The daughter of the family is played with a wonderful directness by newcomer Ahney Her who separates the suspicion of her parents generation by accepting Walt and not giving him the chance to refuse her kindness after he helps save her brother from a gang beating. But really this is a one man show. Eastwood commands every scene and even the amusingly cherub faced (and very ginger) Priest played by Christopher Carley doesn't take your attention away from the fact that a screen legend is giving one of the performances of his career.

As great as Eastwood was in Gran Torino the movie falls just a little short of being a classic. While it is undoubtedly well paced, thought provoking and satisfying, there is perhaps a missing depth of emotion that Eastwood has offered in other movies which keeps Gran Torino from receiving five stars. It's still a terrific film and it just came out on DVD so do yourself a favor and enjoy a Clint flick this weekend as he won't be making them forever.

Irish Sports Network in Financial Trouble

If you are a football (soccer) fan in the US there are really only two English language TV channels that really satisfy your desire to watch 'The Beautiful Game' and specifically the English Premier League (EPL). Fox Soccer Channel has been going in its current form since February 2005 with direct feed from it's British Fox affiliate Sky Sports. The newer entrant into the arena is Setanta Sports based in Ireland and offering many sports including some of the biggest games in the EPL.

These are hard times however and according to a report in Variety recently:

"The Irish company, which broke BSkyB's monopoly of live coverage of English Premier League soccer in the U.K. in 2006, must persuade its private equity backers to stump up more coin or go into administration, the equivalent of Chapter 11.

Setanta must make an outstanding payment to the Premier League of about £40 million ($64 million) by the end of the week. It recently failed to pay $4.7 million to the Scottish Premier League."

Ironically Setanta has only just become an option for Cable subscribers in Arizona (me and a few football watching mates!) and now it looks like it could all go to hell. I can't say I am that upset by it as while I am no fan of Fox/Sky having a monopoly on the games the Irish mob were asking for $15 a month subscription to watch the games versus $5 a month for the Fox Soccer Channel. Oh the joy of watching 'The Beautiful Game' in North America!

Clash of the Titans

Now that the world has been introduced to Aussie native, Sam Worthington in Terminator: Salvation we will all have a hard time avoiding him as he is starring in some pretty big movies over the next couple of years. Later this year he stars in Last Night with Keira Knightley, this is followed by the much anticipated James Cameron Sci-Fi flick Avatar, The Debt hits theaters in 2010 with Helen Mirren and Tom Wilkinson starring and then comes the remake of the 1981 film The Clash of the Titans where Worthington takes on the famous Greek legend alongside Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes.

The good chaps over at Empire managed to get their hands on a couple of stills from the Clash of the Titans shoot which is currently filming at Shepperton Studios in the UK. Enjoy!

Movie Review - Notorious

I guess there are two groups of people that go and see biopics of musicians, those that are fans of the individuals music and those that aren't or are ambivalent but think the story looks interesting. I fall somewhere in between those definitions when it comes to the movie telling of Christopher 'Notorious B.I.G.' Wallace's life. I like a few songs I have heard but don't own either one of the albums he released before his murder in 1997.

The majority of the film was adapted from the book, Unbelievable: The Life, Death and Afterlife of the Notorious B.I.G. by Cheo Hodari Coker which charts his rise from the streets of Brooklyn to the top of the Rap world ending in a feud with West Coast rappers that allegedly cost him his life. The story weaves the different parts of Wallace's life well from being raised by a single mother (played by a stoic Angela Basset) to being dragged off the streets and a life of drug dealing by Sean 'Puff Daddy' Combs and working with the likes of Tupac Shakur, Lil' Kim and the woman he ended up marrying, Faith Evans.

Casting is top notch here with Wallace played by first time actor Jamal Wollard a rapper (Gravy) who had previously worked with Shakur giving him a unique perspective on the role. Naturi Naughton is another new face whose talent shines in her portrayal of Lil' Kim and you can see more of her when Fame is released in September.

Most who watch Notorious will know the story well and there are few surprises for fans of Wallace's music. However it's was a very watchable movie and for the average passer by offers a worthy explanation and background on the events that made up one of musics more famous and tragic stories from the nineties.

Rudo y Cursi

If you enjoyed the excellent 2001 movie Y tu mamá también by Alfonso Cuarón you will want to look out for his new movie Rudo y Cursi which has Cuarón once again directing the always watchable Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna. The film is about the rivalry between two brothers Beto and Tato, nicknamed Rudo (rough) and Cursi (corny) and how that plays out when they are both signed to professional soccer teams in Mexico City.

The movie played at Tribeca and had a very limited release a month ago so you may have to track it down on DVD or your local arthouse theater. You can view the trailer here and below is the UK version of the promo poster for the flick.

In Memoriam - David Carradine

From CNN:

American actor David Carradine has been found dead, hanging by a nylon rope in a hotel room closet in Bangkok, Thailand, according to a Thai police official.

Carradine, who became famous in the 1970s when he starred as traveling Shaolin monk Kwai Chang Caine in the television series Kung Fu, was 72.

The rope was believed to be from the hotel room curtains, Bangkok Police Lt. Col. Pirom Chanpirom said Thursday. He said investigators found no sign of forced entry into Carradine's room. An autopsy was being conducted at a Bangkok hospital, but no results will be available for another day, he said.

A Carradine family spokeswoman issued a short statement saying the family "is devastated by the news of David's passing."

"Circumstances surrounding his death are still unknown, and there will be no further comment until more information can be confirmed," the statement said. "The family appreciates the many expressions of condolence, and asks for privacy at this time."

Police provided Carradine's family with information about their investigation, said Tiffany Smith, Carradine's personal co-manager. Smith said she was "in complete shock" and that suggestions that Carradine took his own life are unbelievable.

"Knowing David, he would never commit suicide," and his death comes at a time when his "career is on a roll," she said.

Carradine was in Bangkok for filming of the movie Stretch, being produced by a United Kingdom-based company, she said. He was the only American cast member.

Modern audiences may best know Carradine as "Bill" in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill films. He earned a 2005 Golden Globe nomination for his role in the second movie in the two-part saga.

His career included more than 100 feature films, two dozen television movies and theater work, according to the Internet Movie Database.

"He was clearly an actor who followed his own path," said Leah Rozen, the movie critic for People magazine.

Career Highlights
Television
Shane, 1966
Kung Fu, 1972-1975
North and South, 1985
Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, 1992

Film
Bound for Glory, 1976
Kill Bill: Vol. 1, 2003
Kill Bill: Vol. 2, 2004

"He was never a guy who talked a whole lot. You knew him as an actor, the characters he played, you knew they had a past, you knew there was probably some unhappiness there, but he wasn't going to talk about it."

Carradine made appearances in television series including Gunsmoke and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. His first starring role in a series was as the title character in Shane in 1966.

He worked with such directors as Martin Scorsese in Box Car Bertha in 1972 and Robert Altman in The Long Goodbye in 1973.

Carradine was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role as folk music legend Woody Guthrie in the 1976 movie "Bound For Glory," according to a biography on his official Web site.

His theater career began while he studied drama at San Francisco State College in California. He later landed roles on Broadway in The Deputy and The Royal Hunt of the Sun.

Carradine's legacy will probably be the "Kill Bill" movies and the "Kung Fu" series, Rozen said.
The Kill Bill casting was particularly smart, she added.

"Tarantino was tapping into his just natural coolness, but more to the point, Tarantino was playing off that he still had this whole following from the Kung Fu TV series," Rozen said. Watch Carradine talk about his Kung Fu role »

Carradine, who was married five times and divorced four, is survived by his widow, Annie Bierman, according to People magazine.

Carradine was part of an acting dynasty. He was the son of actor John Carradine, a character actor who had appeared in hundreds of films, plays and television episodes. David Carradine also acted with his brothers Keith and Robert.

"David's career as an artist did not begin on the stage, though some of his early career was on and off Broadway. His earliest work was as a sculptor and painter," Carradine's official Web site says. The site also includes an "Art Bio" in which the actor opens up about his life.

"I've always had an especially hard time with everything I've tried to do," Carradine wrote.

"I've made it pretty big as an actor in spite of being terminally shy. ... Invariably, I had huge obstacles to overcome in anything I tried. Had to work against my genes to achieve my dreams."

Lars Von Trier's Antichrist Trailer

It was the talk of the Cannes Film Festival and now the trailer has been released ahead of it's July 24th release. From the director that gave us Breaking the Waves and Dancer in the Dark comes Antichrist, another controversial film that had everyone in Cannes either loving or hating it. Charlotte Gainsbourg plays an anguished woman trying to come to terms with the death of her child with her partner played by Willem Dafoe. Gainsbourg was nominated for Best Actress at the festival in what was surely a harrowing role to play.

Family Guy for an Emmy?

TV Titan Seth McFarlane is once again putting the animated hit show Family Guy up for an Emmy foe the second time at this years TV Oscars.

"We don't produce our show the that way SpongeBob does," MacFarlane said. "We're much more analogous to traditional sitcoms. Our writers don't come from animation; they come from comedies. I hear people all the time tell me that they love The Office, 30 Rock and our show. Then why are we not all competing in the same world?"

The 61st annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be aired on CBS September 13th.

The Road

Shame on me for not posting this trailer earlier. I am pretty sure I linked to it on Twitter a month or so back so if you follow me @bigsmallscreen you will have seen it. If not you are in for a treat. Thanks to my better half I read half of this extraordinary novel by Cormac McCarthy (No Country for Old Men) on my flight up to Toronto today but for those of you who haven't heard about The Road, the movie adaptation is a post-apocalyptic road trip for a Father and Son with Viggo Mortensen looking like he has done a sensational job. Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce and Robert Duvall also star.

Conan Begins Tonight Show Reign

In the pop culture conversation of whether you are a 'Dave' or a 'Jay' fan I have to say any answer I ever gave was somewhat half-hearted. I would probably choose Dave if I was watching but I am not a big fan of either show. These days all of the good interviews can be watched on youtube and there are far funnier people to watch give monologues than Talk Show hosts. However for those raised on The Tonight Show this evenings first show with new host Conan O'Brien will no doubt be exciting as we watch how he handles the transition.

Tonight's guests include Will Ferrel and Pearl Jam.
