"The move by the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., NBC and Dick Clark Prods. to recruit the Brit comic as host of the Jan. 17 Golden Globe Awards comes as another sign of producers looking to shake up the basic formula for televised kudofests -- just as Hugh Jackman and Neil Patrick Harris repped departures from the norm as host of this year's Oscars and last month's Emmy Awards, respectively."
I have to say I think it's an excellent choice as the comic's previous appearances at similar shows have been tinged with a nice edge that is so often missing from the 'love-ins' these awards shows tend to turn into. The Golden Globes being the night for the Hollywood Foreign Press allow for a little more sharp edged humor than something like the Academy Awards so it should give Gervais an opportunity to be himself and not a watered down version.
