Movie Review - Wanted

The tag line for this flick is 'Choose Your Destiny' and if you have any control over yours then you won't rent/buy this DVD!

In no uncertain terms Wanted anwers the question of what A-List stars do when they want to buy another home. Morgan Freeman and Angela Jolie seemed to be on autopilot during this oh so silly action flick in which The Last King of Scotland's James McAvoy plays a humdrum office lackey sucked into a brotherhood of assassins led by Freeman with Jolie as his bad-ass, perma-frown wearing mentor.

OK so yes you know what you are going to get just by looking at the poster but you would have to hope that the leads would have at least selected a script that kept you semi-interested. From the faux-Matrix effects, to the ludicrous 'loom of fate' (that actually made me laugh out loud) which weaves textile with a coded message of who is next for the chop, this is a joke of a film.

The action sequences are slick and fast paced but this is nowhere near enough to rescue the movie. It seems this is the first big Hollywood job for the Kazakhstan director Timur Bekmambetov who previously directed commercials for a bank ... sorry but I won't be tuning in to see what this guy does next.

  1. See, I really liked this film for the simple reason that it was a joke of a film. From the "loom of fate" to the "curve the bullet" catch phrase it was silly all around but I think the movie played off that silliness rather well. Sure the acting and the script weren't really great but I ejoyed the hell out of it. And this is coming from a guy that ripped the hell out of Indiana Jones 4 because of how terrible the script was. Wanted gets away with it though because as you say, it was a joke of a film.

  2. This was a flick I really wanted to like, I am a sucker for dumb action movies (I even enjoyed JCVD's Timecop!) but this was just too bonkers for me.
I agree with you about Indy ... a real shame.

  3. It is possible that I enjoyed it so much because I went in with low expectations. I just found myself very entertained though. I am thinking about catching it again to see if I enjoy it as much the second time around.
