Mamma Mia DVD Breaks Records

I enjoyed the musical version of Mamma Mia when I saw it in London some years back but this years movie adaptation was verging on painful. Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Meryl Streep are fine actors but I think they should stick to non-musical scripts in the future!

That said it seems my fellow Brits across the pond think I couldn't be more wrong as the DVD sold 1.7 million copies in the UK on Monday, its first day on release. This breaks the previous record held by Titanic which sold 1.1 million units when it came out on DVD back in 1998.

Abba were always a hit in the UK and have been one of the few acts of the 70s to have remained constantly popular through the decades. Therefore it was no surprise that the musical had its worldwide premiere in London in 1999. The show has become something of a theatrical franchise with the phenomenon spreading across the world:

1999 London West End
2000 Toronto
2000 Boston and D.C.
2001 Broadway
2001 Australasian Tour
2002 U.S. Tour
2003 Las Vegas
2003 Utrecht
2004 Madrid
2005 Stockholm
2006 Antwerp
2006 Moscow
2007 Manchester
2007 Barcelona
2008 Istanbul
2009 Oslo
2009 México

No doubt the DVD will end up under quite a few Christmas trees this December but fingers crossed mine won't be one of them ... Humbug!

  1. couldn't agree more - loved the stage version - thought the movie just dragged along without much life.
