This is not the poster we all associate with The Shining but I actually think it is creepier than the classic image of Jack Nicholson's character axing his way through a door. This film really is a classic and still stands up today as a superior supernatural chiller. The performance by Nicholson is superb and along with the Hotel itself is enough to earn the film its tag line A Masterpiece of Modern Horror.
I recently visited the Timberline Lodge at the foot of Mount Hood in Oregon on a cold blustery day and it is certainly an imposing building. Seeing this classic movie location in the winter was really exciting for a fan of cinema but as with all exterior shots of buildings the interior is usually vastly different (thank goodness!). As I looked down the corridors in the hotel I wondered if I was about to come face to face with the spookiest twins in movie history! It is remarkable that two actresses so young with so little screen time have been seared into the consciousness of so many.
