The Return of Mickey Rourke

To coin a phrase, who knew?

When I was reading the buzz around the Toronto Film Festival there was alot of hoo-ha about a new flick by Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain) called The Wrestler. Nothing too exciting about the title or the announcement until the still (pictured here)  from the film was released and WOW, is that Mickey Rourke?

This movie is about a retired professional wrestler (Rourke taking the lead role) as he returns to the ring for one last battle with his old rival.  Nothing so far would make me go and see this flick at the theater but then the festival season began:

Golden Lion winner at Venice

'... a performance of astonishing commitment, detail and emotional impact, Mickey Rourke reclaims his position at the pinnacle of American acting in The Wrestler' Cameron Bailey,  tiff08.ca

Closing movie of the 46th New York Film Festival on October 12th.

Other than Sin City which I heard great things about but haven't seen yet (I know, tsk tsk) Rourke's last movie that got talked about was the positively dreadful Domino, a film so awful and ill-conceived it should never be spoken of again. But here he is in an award winning movie, closing festivals and making critics gush. Could The Wrestler be to Rourke what Pulp Fiction was to Travolta (until Old Dogs was released).

For me the image posted here of Rourke is enough to make me go and see this movie. In one still you forget the rotten tomatoes of his career and want too believe he can make the ultimate cinematic comeback because really, who seriously thought he would be seen in a quality flick again? Fingers crossed Mickey.

The Wrestler opens in the US on December 19th 2008.
