The Valet (La Doublure) was released in 2006 and I just watched this on dvd mainly because it stars one of my favorite French actors, Daneil Auteuil. This movie is about as light as it gets, think a meringue crossed with a feather and you will have some idea as to the effort it takes to get through the 85 mins of this very gentle comedy. It is a Francis Veber (Writer & Director) movie and I did enjoy 2001's The Closet which was equally easy on the brain and that's fine. There are times when you want a 'veg out' movie that will give you a few gentle laughs and lots of smiles and he delivers.
The cast is strong with a great performance by the lead Gad Elmaleh as Francios Pignon, the Valet who suddenly finds himself dating a super model (or 'Top Model' as the French call it ... does Tyra know?!). I was surprised to see Kristin Scott Thomas playing the wife of Auteuil's character and speaking fluent French. This brings to mind the surprising Jodie Foster appearance in Jean-Pierre Jeunet's A Very Long Engagement (what a five star movie that one is).
So is it worth seeing? Yes for an easy going Friday night in but if you want belly laughs look elsewhere.
