Fresh from the DVD Play kiosk at Safeway (my source for those impulse DVD needs!) is Street Kings. On paper this looks like my kind of flick, a gritty LA cop drama with a strong cast and by the looks of the trailer a ton of atmosphere.Casting Keanu 'whoa' Reeves as the lead seemed risky to me as he doesn't spring to mind when you think tough cop mixing it up in gangland LA. As it turns out he didn't do a terrible job but he also didn't shine and I think Michael Chiklis has had alot to do with setting the standard for tough LA cop portrayal. The supporting cast was strong with a very good turn from Forest Whitaker and I even liked Hugh Laurie as the Captain (he actually sounded American!).
The movie was shot beautifully especially the night scenes and this was only director David Ayers second movie at the helm after 2005's Harsh Times.
Overall this was a good enough movie with a few decent moments (it really picks up the pace in the final 30 mins) but Reeves didn't convince in the lead role and that dropped a star in my rating.
Rating: **
