One of the big successes of early summer was Iron Man having has taken a whopping $318,000 at the Box Office as of September 10th. It is yet another Marvel adaptation following Spiderman, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Blade, Ghostrider and next years much anticipated The Watchmen.I am not actually a huge fan of comic book movies. Spiderman 1 was pretty good but 2 & 3 didn't do it for me. The buzz around Iron Man and in particular the performance of Robert Downey Junior was enough for me to check it out.
In the end it was a jolly romp with a big dollop of silliness, great action sequences and usually serious actors playing fun roles. RDJ continues to put the past behind him with another excellent turn but I wasn't convinced by corporate bad guy Jeff Bridges who is usually one of my favorite actors. Gweneth Paltrow looked like she was acting with her eyes closed as the role was so simple in all senses of the word.
Having caught the new Hulk flick earlier in the summer and seen the appearance (SPOILER ALERT) of RDJ after the credits rolled suggests what we all already know ... it's all about a new franchise. Let's just hope the second Iron Man keeps up the energy and goes to a new and exciting place a la The Dark Knight for Batman.
