Oh dear. That is how I would sum up this debacle of a film. I have been a Woody Allen fan for years and rate Manhattan in my top movies of all time but sadly it will not come as news to anyone to know that Allen has hit a spotty run of form lately. Scoop was largely awful, Match Point was OK, Melinda and Melinda was pretty decent and Anything Else was, well, I am too polite to say!
Cassandra's Dream looked promising, set in London where I lived for 10 years and with three actors I have a lot of time for, Ewan McGregor, Colin Farrel and Tom Wilkinson. Unfortunately McGregor and Farrel were a Scotsman and an Irishman playing Londoners and while they are both talented actors they just ended up sounding ridiculous. With the amount of talent out there why on earth couldn't Allen find two genuine actors to play the Cockney brothers, did he really have to go for two big names? They were also fighting a script that seemed to scream a lack of understanding of how people in England talk let alone Londoners.
It was one of those movies that you found yourself thinking 15 mins in and then 30 mins in, is this really as bad as it seems? The sad answer was 'yes it is'.
What makes it worse is that the plot was half decent but even with Tom Wilkinson playing a role he could have done with his eyes closed it was not enough to save this from being an all round embarrassment.
Oh dear indeed.
