Movie Review - Bangkok Dangerous

When you go and see an action movie called Bangkok Dangerous starring Nicholas Cage you have to be prepared to accept that it is unlike to feature heavily in next years awards season. So on an unusually hot Arizona morning (109 degrees in September!) I trundled off to the Multiplex to have 90 mins of free aircon and some lighthearted action movie fun.

All the way through the flick I was asking myself, do I actually like this film or not? There were some great action scenes and it was great to see a Hollywood movies based in and around the crazy city of Bangkok. On the down side we have the plot ... polished assassin goes off to finish final job while falling in love with deaf and mute beauty from the local pharmacy who is his only possible path to redemption! It was so formulaic as to be nearly laughable. When Cage employs a local crim' to help him run errands during the final job and then decided to make him him his 'student' of the trade I couldn't get David Carradine (check out how much this guy has worked over his career!) and 'Grasshopper' out of my head.

Interestingly the movie was directed by the Pang Brothers, 40-something twin brother screen writers and directors whose previous work include the original Bangkok Dangerous (1999), and a host of other Hong Kong based movies. One of the brothers is called Oxide Pang, no really, which may relate to his previous job as a colorist.....strange.

As I think I said in a previous post there is something I like about Cage which will get me through most of the sub-par movies he has starred in and this was a good example of that. Anyway it was an 11am showing so only cost 7 bucks and the aircon was cranking away nicely (sorry Mr Gore!) so not a total waste of a Saturday morning.
