There is no better director to capture the essence of working class English life than Mike Leigh. From the hilarious laughs of 1977's Abigail's Party to the tragedy of 2004's Vera Drake Leigh's films are never comfortable viewing but are some of the most absorbing stories ever shown on the big and small screen.
The quality of the actors he has worked with over the years has been outstanding with special mentions going to Alison Steadman in Abigail's Party, Jim Broadbent in Life is Sweet and of course the incredible performance given by David Thewlis in Naked.
2008 sees the release of his latest work, a comedy/drama called Happy Go Lucky. This is the closing movie of the upcoming Scottsdale Film Festival October 3-7 which will feature a post-film Q&A with director Leigh. Typically as my luck is running with film festivals this year I will not be in town to attend. So I will be sending a guest blogger (my better half) to review the flick and do some serious fawning at the feet of Mr Leigh!
